Case Study

1

Mr K of Withington Manchester, who is 81 years of age, approached Anchor Staying Put in 2005, as he required financial assistance with some urgent repairs to his roof.

The pathways around his house were also very uneven and slippery due to moss growth, and as our customer has mobility issues and walks aided by a walking stick, we applied to Manchester City Council on his behalf. The council requested that we apply to Equipment and Adaptations for assistance with the pathway. An Occupational Therapist attended and agreed that Mr K was at risk of slipping and falling outside his house. Unfortunately pathways did not fall within their criteria; however, they wrote to us explaining their concern and the benefits of a new pathway to both our customer and his wife.

Staying Put re-applied to the council for a grant, bearing in mind Mr K has a limited income and little savings.

In April this year, the City Council agreed to fund the pathway and other urgent repairs. Mr K is extremely happy and looking forward to his new pathway. We are now just awaiting the contractor to set a date to start work. Fortunately, for Mr K, he will be able to go out during this summer, and safely walk around his gardens.

Case Study 2

Mrs G from Longsight was referred to the Manchester Independent Living Service by her Community Psychiatric Nurse, as she felt that Mrs G would benefit from extra support. Mrs G suffers with ill health and her mood is described as low to moderate. Mrs G`s husband is in a nursing home suffering with Alzheimer’s, which adds to her distress. One of our Caseworkers accompanied Mrs G to the nursing home to visit her husband on his birthday.

Mrs G was also having trouble from an individual who knew she lived alone and wanted to buy her house at a very low cost. The MILS Caseworker gave Mrs G some of her contact cards and asked her to pass them on to anyone asking to buy the property and she also contacted the police as a precaution. The Caseworker took Mrs G to look at local sheltered schemes as she felt that she could no longer manage her home and the amount of maintenance needed was far too much to cope with. In between looking at sheltered schemes Mrs G`s husband died. The Caseworker was asked for help and supported Mrs G in registering the death and arranging the funeral.

Since the funeral we have arranged for someone to help with the shopping/picking up pension, bereavement counselling and we are helping to find new accommodation for her as a matter of urgency. Mrs G is now far more confident of her future and is looking forward to her move.
