Case Study

Miss W has is in her early 20’s and has been wheelchair reliant for many years. She lives with her mother and was forced to move from their house into a bungalow where the out lying gardens were on a level plain to enable her to move around more easily.

However there was a step into the front porch and through the front door. Furthermore the WC was very small making difficult for Miss W to transfer from her wheel chair.

This situation was not ideal and Mrs W. was prompted to contact a Wiltshire County Council Occupational Therapist who reviewed the situation and referred Miss W to Salisbury Staying Put agency

The agency Caseworker visited to carry out a financial assessment and from that a Technical Officer carried out a survey.

It was found that Miss W bedroom was adjacent to the WC which in turn was adjoining the bathroom.    A scheme was drawn up whereby the bathroom and WC was converted into one room with the WC being repositioned to allow sufficient space for transferring. A door way was constructed from Miss W’s bedroom allowing her an unobstructed passage through to the WC and a level access shower was also installed

The final action was to construct a permanent ramp to the front entrance with a gradient suitable for a self propelled wheel chair.

Anchor Staying Put in Salisbury took the worry from Miss W by taking on all the arranging, for consultation with the OT and the customer, by assisting in form filling and grant applications to Salisbury District Council, for obtaining competitive tenders and overseeing the works to their conclusion

Miss W is now able to access all toilet and washing facilities and to enjoy the garden or indeed leave the bungalow for any reason in the knowledge that she has no problems with getting back indoors.
